Restaurant City FAQ

1. How do I earn more ingredients?

You receive a free daily ingredient for your first log in to Restaurant City each GMT day.You also earn an ingredient for each daily quiz you answer correctly! You can purchase a select few ingredients each day from the Ingredient Market, the ingredients available for purchase change each day at midnight GMT. To locate the Ingredient Market, when inside your restaurant click and drag the screen so that you see outside above your restaurant. Here is what it looks like:

And, you earn one new ingredient for the first ever visit you make to each friend! (This is a once only ingredient per friend, not daily.)

2. How do I earn more cash?

You earn cash from serving customers at your restaurant. However, you can also earn cash by picking up trash; and clicking on the trees around your restaurant and your friends’ restaurants to ‘bump’ them.

3. How do I hire employees and how do I fire them?

To hire one of your friends select the magnifying glass icon. Then just select the purple ‘Hire’ button of the friend you would like to hire!To fire one of your friends, select that employee while in your restaurant view and then select the ‘Sack’ button. Note that you will be required to pay 200 cash as severance pay if you would like to sack a friend!

4. What is the advantage of leveling up a particular dish?

For each increase in level of a dish, you earn slightly more Gourmet Points when a customer has that dish. However, it is not one full point extra for each level, instead it is around an 0.2 Gourmet Point increase per level, so once you have a dish at level 2, most of the time you will still see just 1 Gourmet Point increase when serving it, but sometimes you will see a 2 Gourmet Point gain. Also, the appearance of the dish being served improves as the dish is leveled up.

5. How do I learn and level up dishes?

To learn a dish, you need to gather all the ingredients required for that dish. Once you have the ingredients (which are displayed via the ‘Change Menu’ icon), select the ‘Change Menu’ icon and then select the pink ‘Learn’ button underneath your dish of choice. When you do this, those ingredients you gathered for that dish will be removed from your inventory, and you will now be able to serve the dish to your customers if you chose. To level up any dish, you need to gather the same ingredients for that dish again, once you have all the ingredients required, again select the ‘Change Menu’ icon, find the dish you are wishing to level up, and then select blue ‘Level Up’ button. After you have learnt or leveled up a particular dish and you wish to change what you are serving in your restaurant to the new dish, you need to click the picture of the dish you wish to serve (while in the ‘Change Menu’ screen). You will notice that a yellow circle then appears around the base of the dish to show that it is what you are currently serving!

6. Why aren’t my Gourmet Points increasing, even though my cash has from serving meals?

Your Gourmet Points will only increase if you are in your own restaurant when serving the meals. If you are not logged into the game, have another screen open like the redecorate screen, or are visiting a friend’s restaurant, your cash will increase for those meals, but your Gourmet Points will not. Therefore, if you are wishing to level up, leaving your screen open to your restaurant is recommended.

7. What is Popularity and what is the maximum Popularity you can achieve?

Popularity is the number shown by the thumbs up icon towards the top right of your screen. The higher this number is, the happier your customers have been, so the more customers will visit. At the moment, the maximum Popularity is 50.

8. How do I stop my Popularity going down when I am not using the game?

If you are worried about your Popularity decreasing while you are not using the game, you can use the ‘Redecorate’ button to remove any doors on your restaurant while you are not using it. This will stop customers coming in and getting upset if you are resting your employees, or your employees need food or rest. You can also put a table, plant, etc. in front of your door(s) to stop customers coming in.

9. What happens when my employees’ health decreases?

When you employees health decreases, your employee starts to work slower. Once an employee’s health reaches zero, that employee will stop working altogether and will need food or rest before starting work again.

10. Do the more expensive stoves cook faster?

No, all stoves cook at the same speed currently.

11. How do I trade ingredients? (How does it work?)

From the Knowledge Base:

Quote:
Firstly, you’ll need to enter your friend’s restaurant and choose the TRADE INGREDIENTS icon as shown below. You will then see the trading menu. Choose the ingredient you want from your friend and then choose another ingredient from yourself. Remember that trading only works if the ingredient that you’re trading is of the same level or higher level of stars than your friend’s.The second way of trading is by choosing the TRADE LOCKED INGREDIENTS icon. You can request trade on any locked ingredients with any of your friends, but you’ll need to wait for his or her approval.

12. How do I lock and unlock ingredients?

If you want to save an ingredient for a future dish, and do not want anyone to be able to trade that ingredient away from you, you need to lock it. To lock a particular dish, select the ‘Change Menu’ icon and then click on the picture of the unlocked ingredient you wish to lock. Once an ingredient is locked you will see a padlock icon appear on top of its picture so that you know it is locked. If you wish to unlock an ingredient (for example one you’ve decided you’d like your friends to be able to trade from you), again select the ‘Change Menu’ icon, and this time click the locked ingredient that you would like to unlock. You will notice that the padlock icon is removed!

13. How do you move floor tiles and wallpapers?

To move a floor tile or wallpaper, you need to replace it with another one. The old one will appear as available in your ‘Floor Tile’ or ‘Wallpaper’ section of your Redecorate icon to be placed where you wish.

14. Why do I have some ingredients that do not appear in any of the recipes?

These are most likely ingredients that are for future, yet-to-be-released recipes!

15. Why do some of my customers have red circles with stars around their feet?

These customers are your friends!

16. What do all the icons the customers show mean?

A red thumbs down icon means your customer was unhappy with the service. The icon that is shown prior to this will tell you more.

A seat icon means that there is no available seat in your restaurant.

RESTAURANT CITY USEFUL TIPS AND FACTS

1. To scroll around your restaurant and its surroundings, hold onto your left mouse button and drag it. [Inside the restaurant]

2. You can shake trees (found outside restaurants) for money by clicking on them. So go around to your friends' place and shake their trees too. [Inside the restaurant] The less money means smaller restaurant with more trees

3. Earn extra cash by clearing up other people's trash. To clear trash, click on it with your mouse. [Inside the restaurant]

4. To avoid over-exhausting your employees when you leave the game for more than 3 hours, simply remove the door or place an item (such as a deco tree or mailbox) in front of your door. The place will be empty. [Inside your restaurant]

5. Feed your workers so they have max health then 'save and quit' before you go to sleep or head out for >5 hours. When you load the game again, you should get an earning of 2000 coins. Your employees may be lying there exhausted but you can fix that with a sandwich (Please note that you MUST 'save and quit' FIRST. Do not let it run on your computer while you are gone.)

6. Missed out on an ingredient cause you didn't get the daily food quiz question right? I compiled a list of questions and correct answers for you!

Please help contribute if you can!

7. You can distract the extra customers with arcade machines! They will play and then leave the restaurant without decreasing your popularity points

8. Apart from the arcade machine, sinks and toilets, the other deco items are currently not interactive so spend your money wisely on items that you need

9. Think twice before buying an item because although they may be cheap (such as windows), don't get them yet if you have your eye on something more pricey. Just save up since how you decorate the restaurant does not affect the number of customers or your popularity

10. Sometimes you may miss trash because it's concealed by another object. Simply click the "Redecorate" or "Street View" button, then return to your restaurant. The trash will have shuffled around to a different random spot, and you should probably be able to see it!

11. Try not to let the health of your workers go below 80% as their efficiency will decrease quite signficantly.

12. Got no cleaner to clean toilets? Or are they ignoring the dirty toilets? Just remove the toilets by 'redecorating' then place them back! Good as new!!

.
13. Find out your friends menu by clicking the menu holder on the wall.

RESTAURANT CITY TIPS TO LEVEL UP QUICKLY

1. Focus on leveling on ONE type of starter, main and dessert. Be open to trading so you can collect items required to level up your chosen specific meals. You will get more gourmet points when customers order dishes of greater level

2. Arrange your tables in this manner; where everyone is seated close to the cooks so the waiters do not have to waste time walking:
http://malvinnjacqueline.blogspot.com/2009/07/efficient-table-setting.html

3. Due to my preference of the seating arrangement above, I would add two or three tables for each cook I have.
At the moment, I have 4 cooks, 2 waiters and 10 tables.
You will have to make your own judgment by adjusting the number of tables, seating arrangement but as a rough* guide:
With 1 cook, 1 waiter = 3 tables
With 2 cooks, 1 waiter = 6 tables
With 3 cooks, 1 waiter = 8 -9 tables
With 4 cooks, 2 waiters = 10 -12 tables
numbers and see what your staff can handle as it differs with the way you arranged your tables and where your cooks are!

4. Go to the trading forum and try trading for ingredients and items that you want!

5. If possible, try to find someone who wishes to level up dishes completely different from yours (of which require different ingredients to yours) so you can trade and help each other to advance!

6. Want to tell your friends the items you need? Use your restaurant name to leave a message such as "Need Leeks and Potatoes". It's a simple, clever and effective way of saying what you want!

7. Can't decide whether to bar the door or leave your restaurant run while you sleep? Just let it run anyway (after you've logged out of course). Read Useful Tip #5 to find out why!

8. Adding "temporary" friends may help you get more ingredients but please be aware that Facebook will shut your account down if you add too many friends within a short period of time. [URL=http://www.facebook.com/help/question.php?id=1385]Please read this.[/URL]

9. To delay the customers' journey to their tables, create a barrier by arranging dividers or any deco items from the doorway leading towards the dining area. This will allow more time for the waiters to clear the tables

Guide to Efficient Restaurant Layouts

Introduction

We pride ourselves on squeezing every last gourmet point of out of our staff before they collapse from exhaustion! This guide will show you how to build efficient and effective restaurant layouts to maximize your bottom line!

Note: This guide only covers single "island" layouts, which are easier to build but not as efficient as multiple island layouts. If you're feeling adventurous (or you are "hardcore") and don't mind a bit of extra work, go check out my Guide to Multiple Island Layouts.
*Basic Strategies

1. Don't make your waiters walk
The less your waiter walks, the more time he spends serving and the less time he spends getting there.

2. Too many tables!
Resist the urge to add as many tables as you can afford. If you have too many tables and not enough cooks, you won't get the food out fast enough! I find that you should only offer 3 tables for each cook you have.

3. Center your stoves
Keep your stoves centered. A food order from any table can go to any stove. Don't keep all your stoves clustered in one area.

4. Use corners
Your waiter can service in all 8 directions, so use corners as much as possible to give him the most reach.

5. Box waiters in
Form a complete square or rectangle using your tables to trap the waiters in. This way, they don't wander around needlessly to serve food.

6. Avoid the walls

Don't set your tables and chairs against a wall or the grass:

Customers aren't very courteous and they refuse to scoot in!
The 3 empty seats shown above will always remain empty because the two customers block them off.
*Advanced Strategies

7. Count steps
A good, quick rule of thumb to judge a layout's efficiency is to ask yourself: how many steps maximum do my waiters have to take? Both these layouts have the same number of tables and stoves, but one is more efficient! Which one?

The answer is the first one, because waiters only have to travel a maximum of 2 steps. In the second one, waiters have to travel a maximum of 3.

8. Avoid diagonals
Look closely at your waiters' speed, you can actually see that they move slower diagonally! It takes 1.4 times longer to cross a tile diagonally than to cross it up, down, left, or right (but it is still faster than going through 2 tiles!). Whenever possible, within reason, try to remove diagonals from your waiters' path.

9. A Note on "Island" Layouts
You'll sometimes see restaurants that have two or more "islands", each island having their own cooks and waiters, like this one:

These islands are very effective, because smaller designs (with less cooks and tables) are much more efficient than bigger, bulkier designs. However, they're also more difficult to create. I've written a Guide to Island Layouts, but this guide will focus strictly on traditional designs since these are easier.
*Recommended Layouts

All right, enough talk, here are my recommended layouts!

2 Cooks, 1 Waiter

3 Cooks, 1 Waiter

3 Cooks, 2 WaitersKeep the same layout as above (3 Cooks, 1 Waiter), because you'll need more cooks to handle more tables.

4 Cooks, 2 Waiters
5 Cooks, 2 Waiters

What to do when you have 8 staff

Congratulations, you now have a full staff! If you've come this far, you should really consider using island layouts instead, since it's hard to make an efficient 8 staff "traditional" layout. Check out my guide on Island Layouts.Check back often because these designs are always evolving and updating thanks to feedback from the community. Thanks for reading and I hope that this was helpful!
